Give me your Wave or your Life

1 Oct

Thursday 1 October 2009, will henceforth be known as the day that the geek population of the world went on a massive internet hunt to lie/cheat/beg/steal/ plunder an invite for the new offering by Google – “Google Wave”. If you have an invite, it makes you a demi-god and in your hands lie the power to order the “masses of the willing” to do your every whim. Google initally only sent out 100,000 invites to a selected few of the millions who initially registered for a Wave account, kinda like winning the lottery. Reminds me of the time gmail was released in a similar fashion.

This is yet another great marketing ploy by Google to raise interest in their product without actually having to do any major marketing at all.  Everyone likes to be a member of a private club and google has mastered this theory into the launch of every new major google service. As I speak, some of the google invites are being sold on eBay for more than $200 a pop.

So what is Google Wave then… Rory Cellan-Jones best explains it in his blog

a combination of e-mail and instant messaging on steroids

If any of you are wondering, I wasn’t one of the lucky few to receive an invite, but Sheema Siddiqi who blogs at http://www.sheemasiddiqi.com/ has been kind enough to invite me, so will just have to now sit and twiddle my fingers while waiting to get my login :)

Below is a video from Google about the Wave -
