Turned on the news today morning and saw images of the aftermath of the Chile earthquake. The Earthquake had a magnitude of 8.8 which is far stronger than the disastrous Earthquake in Haiti which measured 7.0 in the Richter scale. The Chile quake struck early morning close to the north-east of the city of Concepcion and south-west of the capital, Santiago.
This was the strongest earthquake affecting Chile since the magnitude 9.5 1960 Valdivia earthquake (the most energetic earthquake ever measured in the world), and it is the strongest earthquake worldwide since the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.
An amazing story that came out of this disastrous event is of a family who left Haiti after the earthquake and found refuge in Chile only to experience a bigger earthquake. They must be the unluckiest people in the world or are they? Considering no member of their family died or were injured, they might just be the luckiest.
I guess the new version of the song “We are the world” (written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie) that was made to raise funds for Haiti would be apt for today.
