Day 97 – Krav Maga

7 Apr

I have taken a keen interest in Krav Maga, it is a contact combat system developed in Israel. In essence, Krav Maga isn’t about being a tough guy, it is an art of self-defense, it is not about learning how to fight in a ring, it is about going home alive no matter what the situation.

Traditional martial arts are generally criticized for their lack of real-life applicability. Most people learn Martial Arts to look after themselves but Martial Arts in their traditional form are not realistic self defense systems – and were never meant to be – they are more of a sport with rules to prevent illegal moves and foul play.

Krav Maga on the other hand is all about fighting dirty and learning no-holds-barred moves in a real life situation. When assaulted an individual has the right to use whatever techniques necessary to defend themselves. It is a survival system that teaches you to use your instinct to defend against both armed and unarmed attackers. It also instils aggressiveness, fighting spirit, situational awareness, and promotes verbal de-escalation of conflict

General Krav Maga principles include:

  • Counter attacking as soon as possible (or attacking preemptively).
  • Targeting attacks to the body’s most vulnerable points such as the eyes, jaw, throat, groin, knee etc.
  • Neutralising the opponent as quickly as possible by responding with an unbroken stream of counter attacks and if necessary a take down/joint break.
  • Maintaining awareness of surroundings while dealing with the threat in order to look for escape routes, further attackers, objects that could be used to defend or help attack and so on.

Day 12 – Pumping Iron

12 Jan

After 2 months (holidays, Christmas, New Year) in the wilderness, I hit the gym properly for the first time today.  Easing myself back in this week, the weights I used to lift as warm ups seem awfully heavy :-|

People always ask me what I get out of bodybuilding and why I am obsessed with it. What people call obsession, I like to think of as dedication. I remember a time, not too long ago, I was a skinny kid with absolutely no confidence. Bodybuilding as cliché as it may be really did change my life; I have inspired a lot of people to start working out and have also personally trained numerous individuals, this is what really drives me on to keep training. Also, I guess like all bodybuilders, I get high on the pain.

My picture of the day is of a set of very sexy irons…..and I would also like to share a quote from Socrates that has always inspired me -

No citizen has a right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training; what a disgrace it is for a man to grow old without ever seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable. – Socrates
